Winona LaDuke

Winona LaDuke is a rural development economist who has spent many years working on energy policy and energy self sufficiency in Native America. She lives and works on the White Earth Reservation. A graduate of Harvard and Antioch Universities, she has authored five books. Ms. LaDuke is currently the Executive Director of the White Earth Land Recovery Project, as well as the Executive Director of the Honor the Earth Fund, a national Native American foundation, both in Northern Minnesota. Today, Ms. LaDuke is known for her work in reconnecting the bonds between local food and culture in Native American communities. She speaks extensively on the importance of sustainable development, renewable energy, and food systems.

“An Evening with Winona LaDuke: Cultivating a Local Food Community”

5:00PM – 6:30PM Local Food Fair - Learn about various sources for purchasing local foods by visiting with representatives from local farms, community supported agriculture operations, grocery co-ops, farmers’ markets, restaurants, and other organizations that promote local food while dining on a variety of complimentary appetizers and beverages made with local ingredients.

6:30 – 8:30 PM Winona LaDuke will discuss the definition of a local food system and look at why local food systems are important in this day and age. Ms. LaDuke is a rural development economist who has spent many years working on energy policy and energy self sufficiency in Native America. She lives and works on the White Earth Reservation. She ran as the Green Party’s vice presidential candidate in l996 and 2000. In 1994, she was voted one of the nation’s 50 most promising leaders under the age of 40 by Time magazine, and in 1998, Ms. Magazine named her Woman of the Year. Today, Ms. LaDuke is known for her work in reconnecting the bonds between local food and culture in Native American communities. She speaks extensively on the importance of sustainable development, renewable energy, and food systems.


This event is co-sponsored by the University of Wisconsin – River Falls College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences (CAFES) and the Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Service (MOSES) through a three-year USDA grant to promote sustainable agriculture in Western Wisconsin, and by the St. Croix Institute for Sustainable Community Development at UW-RF.

There will be limited seating for this event, so please pre-register by emailing Sarah Rykal at sarah.rykal@uwrf.edu before April 20, 2009. While there is no fee for this event, free-will donations will be accepted to help promote sustainable agriculture in Western Wisconsin.
